KSDK – The medical mystery surrounding the MERS virus is still unsolved.
MERS stands for Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. It has been found in 18 countries – including the U.S. – and now, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is looking closely at anyone who may have come in contact with two men who got sick from the virus after traveling to Saudi Arabia.
A third man from Illinois tested positive for antibodies for MERS after meeting one of the infected men. He said his illness was mild, and he reported cold-like symptoms. Approximately 572 cases have been confirmed worldwide – and the disease has proven fatal for 30 percent of those infected.
Dr. Steven Lawrence, an infectious diseases physician at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, joined us Monday on First@4. He gave us an update on the disease.
