KSDK - The Missouri Coalition for the Environment (MCE) released a statement Monday regarding President Obama's proposed Environmental Protection Agency rule that would reduce carbon emissions from power plants 30 percent by 2030, compared to the levels in 2005.

According to MCE, the new rule would mean a reduction of 21 percent from 2012 emission levels.

MCE calls it an attainable goal for Missouri, and a first step in addressing carbon pollution and climate change. The group says Missouri power plants released 87 million tons of carbon pollution in 2011, equal to the annual emissions of 18 million cars. It says this figure ranks Missouri as the 8th highest carbon emitter in the nation.
