Feldt hired Rogers as a painter and gave him a place to stay, according to police. He also knew Rogers since he was 3 years old and had tried to help him straighten out his life a number of times.

Authorities first went to Feldt's home in the 700 block of East Church Street around 8:30 p.m. Monday after a relative of the man living there told officers they had not seen the man for days and were unable to make contact since Thanksgiving.

Officers later entered the house after no one responded earlier and found Feldt already dead on the front room floor.

Rogers also had an outstanding warrant for possession of controlled substances in St. Clair County, according to Mascoutah police.

Rogers is currently held in St. Clair County Jail on $2 million bond.
