EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - The former Madison County treasurer has been sentenced to 30 months in prison and fined $20,000 after he admitted he rigged tax liens.

A federal judge sentenced 58-year-old Fred Bathon in East St. Louis on Friday. Bathon also must pay a $100 special assessment. The Belleville News-Democrat reports Bathon apologized in court, saying he accepts "full responsibility."

Bathon pleaded guilty in February to rigging 2005-2008 tax lien auctions so that his political donors profited from inflated penalties paid by property owners.

Three men accused of conspiring with him also have pleaded guilty to charges in connection with the case.
