EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. – There's an effort underway to rid a Metro East community of violence for the next 40 days.

On Monday, authorities in East St. Louis set up a mobile command center in response to the city's first homicide of the year.

Nineteen-year-old Derundae Smith was shot and killed Saturday afternoon at 71st and State streets.

East St. Louis leaders say their 40 days of non-violence initiative is about doing whatever is necessary to make their community safe.

"Crime is not anything we're going to stand for. We're not going to let it go lightly," said John Lewis.

Police are looking for a person of interest in Smith's murder. We are not naming him because he hasn't been charged.
