GRANITE CITY, Ill. – A Granite City, Ill. man is charged with aggravated driving while under the influence.

Gary W. Phelps, 33, is accused of losing control of his vehicle and hitting a utility pole Tuesday while intoxicated.

The accident happened shortly before 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of W. Chain of Rocks Road and Maryville Road in Granite City.

Police the driver of the vehicle, identified as Phelps, denied being the driver, appeared to be intoxicated, and refused to submit to a field sobriety test. His driver's license had been revoked because he has been convicted of three prior DUI offenses.

Phelps was taken into custody and taken to the Madison County Jail. Because of his three prior DUI convictions, Phelps qualifies for the enhanced DUI offense. He was also charged with obstructing a peace officer and provided false information after an accident and cited with improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper use of registration, no insurance, and failure to wear a seatbelt.

Bond is set at $100,000.
