MADISON COUNTY, Ill. –Deputies are searching for two people who stole guns, ammunition, money and pure silver in a residential burglary just outside Collinsville Monday morning, according to Madison County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies responded to a home in the 6600 block of Lebanon Road Monday evening, where the resident reported his gun safe, which contained firearms, ammunition, money and two pounds of pure silver, had been taken. The silver was in the form of a 10-oz bar, nine 1-oz bars and 12 1-oz coins.
The homeowner says the whole safe was taken, including money his family was using to purchase a home.
From surveillance cameras, deputies found a 2008-2010 light colored Ford Focus approached and left the scene with the rear passenger door open and the safe partially hanging out of it.
The Madison County Sheriff's Office is concerned that these firearms are now on the street.
"We don't know they knew that the gun safe was in there beforehand or whether they just got lucky," said Sheriff Bob Hertz.
He says it was just after 9 a.m. Monday when the criminals forced their way into this home, stealing the safe. They targeted home sharing a parking area with a lawn care business. That business is now credited with capturing surveillance images.
"This is a surprise to me," said Gene Forneris who has lived in the area for 60 years and has his own surveillance cameras. "We know that someday that we will probably be vulnerable to getting hit just like everybody else is."
Forneris says the area currently has a neighborhood watch, but after this he and his neighbors will be extra cautious.
The sheriff says no one was at home during the burglary, but the danger may not be over.
"People that will force their way into your house and take guns are individuals that shouldn't have guns in the first place," said Sheriff Hertz..
