ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) – Kirkwood police arrested a St. Ann, Mo. man Friday for a fatal February hit-and-run on North Kirkwood Road.

Omar Vazquez faces a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident, where 50-year-old Joe Auffenberg was struck and later died.

Auffenberg was found lying in the 400 block of North Kirkwood Road, south of Bodley, Feb. 9 around 11 p.m. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police interviewed a potential witness, who was later cleared, and released stills of the suspect's car, a two-tone minivan.

Approximately a week later, a private award of $10,000 as well as a $1,000 CrimeStoppers award was offered for information in the person responsible for the accident. It was later raised to more than $16,000.

Thursday morning, Overland police officer Joe Jordan spotted a minivan matching the description of the hit-and-run car at a business. The van still had damage to the headlight and hood but had a replaced windshield.

That afternoon, Kirkwood police arrested Vazquez, who was the registered owner and driver of the car at the time of the accident.

Vazquez is being held in St. Louis County jail on $10,000 bond.
