ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) - The St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney's Office charged a 21-year-old woman Friday for allegedly making up a story that she was attacked and nearly raped in a bathroom at Lindenwood University.

On March 7, Joanna Newberry told St. Charles police she had been attacked in Butler Library by a man who threatened her and then tried to pull her clothes off.

As a result, Lindenwood University sent out an alert to over 12,000 students warning them police were investigating an attempted sexual assault.

Earlier this week, Newberry went to the St. Charles Police Department for a follow-up interview and admitted to making the story up. She did not give a specific reason for the allegations.

Newberry was charged with filing a false police report. She faces up to six months in jail and a $500 fine if convicted.
