FLORISSANT, Mo. - A bank robbery suspect is being treated at a local hospital Wednesday for a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the Florissant Police Department said.

According to police, the robbery occurred just before 10:20 a.m. at the US Bank in the 2200 block of N. Lindbergh Boulevard. No one was injured in the robbery.

A bank teller provided police with a description of the suspect and his getaway vehicle. Officers located the vehicle traveling south on Lindbergh and gave chase.

The suspect crashed into the Taylor Street Bridge, just north of Interstate 270 in Hazelwood. The southbound lanes of Lindbergh were closed as a result.

As officers approached the vehicle, the man in the car shot himself in the head.

Police said the suspect was unconscious but breathing when he was taken to the hospital. He is listed in critical condition.
