ST. LOUIS COUNTY – Charges have been filed against the boyfriend of a woman accused of beating her son to death in November 2011.
Edgar Rivas, 26, is charged with abandonment of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence for the murder of 13-month old Tyler Dasher.
Rivas was dating Shelby Dasher when her son died of multiple blunt force trauma. According to police, Dasher admitted to hitting the boy several times because he would not stop crying. She told investigators she hid his body in a wooded area and returned home where she reported him missing.
Tyler's body was found near St. Marcus Cemetery in Affton. Rivas is accused of disposing of Tyler's corpse and not notifying police of his death. He's also accused of hiding plastic gloves and pieces of duct tape used during the crime.
Shortly after Tyler's death, NewsChannel 5 interviewed Rivas. He told us Shelby Dasher was with him at his house the night before the boy's death.
"She had nothing to drink. Nothing. No drugs, no alcohol, nothing. Just hanging out," he said.
He described Dasher as a devoted mother who didn't show signs of frustration.
According to Rivas, the morning of Tyler's death he went over to Dasher's house for breakfast. He said Dasher went in to check on Tyler and she came running out of his bedroom screaming "Where's my baby, where's my baby?!" He told NewsChannel 5 in that interview he cut through the cemetery and walked past Tyler's body without knowing it.
Police took Rivas into custody for questioning and was released the next day.
He is currently in St. Louis County police custody.
