ST. CHARLES COUNTY – St. Peters police say some St. Charles County students are likely to be charged with distributing child pornography.

NewsChannel 5 has exclusively learned the case involves nude selfies taken and texted out by students at Fort Zumwalt East High School.

Like most teenagers, Monique Lewis is tied to her phone and in the halls at East High, others have shared with her what's on their phones.

"Apparently, some boy took a picture of his butt and people were showing it around school," said Monique.

Authorities say that sort of thing has been happening a lot lately.

"Some of the pictures have faces that you can identify and most of them do not," said Fort Zumwalt School Superintendent Bernard DuBray.

He says administrators at East High became aware of girls taking pictures of themselves in several stages of undress and forwarding them to boys at school.

"They want attention of some sort, so that's how they think that they can get it, although they don't understand they're getting the wrong attention," said Monique.

Attention from St. Peters police, who opened an investigation after the school reported it. Police confiscated phones yesterday from students 16-years-old and younger and are building a case of distribution of child pornography. Monique's mother is shocked.

"I hear it on the news, I hear it, you know, friends tell me and stuff but it's actually happening where my daughter goes to school at," said Lena Lewis.

DuBray says he's surprised as well since he says, the district has had a family court judge teach lessons to students about the dangers and potential illegality of sexting.

"I hate this to happen to be such a serious lesson, but it may be what has to happen to really get everybody's attention," he said.

The superintendent says he's aware of at least six students involved. Police don't have a number yet because they are just beginning their investigation but a spokesperson says it involves a lot of teens.

They expect charges in family court in a couple of weeks.
