ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Charges have been filed against a man who police say barricaded himself inside a home in St. Charles over the weekend.

Joel C. Thompson Jr., 26, is charged with first-degree arson.

St. Charles police were called to a home in the 300 block of S. Fourth Street at 5:23 p.m. Sunday for a report of a person, now identified as Thompson, barricaded inside the home. Police determined the Thompson was armed with a knife, firearm, and was suicidal.

Authorities tried to negotiate with Thompson, and called in the St. Charles County Regional SWAT Team.

Police say Thompson exited the home after setting it on fire around 6:44 p.m. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, which caused minor damage to the home. Officers say there was a meth lab inside the home.

Thompson was taken to an area hospital for injuries sustained in the fire. He's listed in serious condition.

Bond is set at $50,000 cash-only.
