ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is warning citizens about a telephone scams from a man pretending to be an IRS agent, telling victims they owe the government money.

Schron Jackson, a spokesperson for the police department, says the man tells the victims if they don't pay the money a warrant will be issued for the victim's arrest.

Victims have reported the telephone scam to police, and say the telephone number that is displayed on the caller ID is 314-444-5555, which is the main telephone number for the police department, or 314-231-1212, which is the police department's non-emergency line.

Jackson says the calls are not being made from police, and an investigation is underway to determine the identity of the male caller.

She says this is a scam and police will never call citizens to collect money on behalf of a government agency.
