GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KSDK) – Investigators are searching for information regarding a fatal hit and run that happened between Thursday night and Friday morning.

Granite City Captain Darin Clements said that the incident happened on the Bike Trail, 100 yards north of Victory Drive and Terminal Avenue.

Jack Hoppe, 35, died in the incident, according to Clements. He is a father of two young girls.

Granite City Police hope that someone comes forward before the window of opportunity closes. Anyone with information regarding the accident is asked to call 618-877-6111.

Hoppe's family says he walked on the trail often. They tell NewsChannel 5 he spoke with his daughters and their mother sometime before he was hit, and told them he was going for a walk. Now, they're making a desperate plea to the person responsible, to come forward.

"We just want to know who did this to Jack. He didn't deserve to die like this," said an emotional family friend, Angela Bivens.

Hoppe's loved ones call him a man with a big heart, who would do anything to make someone smile.

"He would forgive whoever did this, he loved everybody," said Bivens.

So, his friends and family say they're ready to forgive as well. But in return, they're asking whoever hit Jack to do the right thing.

"We just want him to rest in peace. And we want these girls to grow up knowing that there's still kindness in this world, and humanity," said Bivens.
