MANSFIELD, Ohio - A 2-year-old child is back with his mother after police say a family friend kidnapped him, and demanded money or cold medicine as ransom.

Neighbors noticed Deana Hebert had something usual at her apartment Saturday: a baby.

"I asked her how she was doing today and she said she was babysitting," said neighbor Barbara Welch.

The baby had been kidnapped, but the whole incident started a few miles away in a Mansfield home where someone called 911 to report a meth lab.

While police were there, a woman came up to officers and showed them a text on her phone, a picture of her grandson with this message: "Consider this a ransom. I want my (expletive) money."

The kidnapper wanted either money or boxes of cold medicine used to make meth. Police were led to an apartment where they found the baby and arrested Hebert.

"I seen them knocking on the door and I seen them put her to the ground," said Welch.

But when they tried to pick up the man with her, Charly Ledbetter, he fled. Police lost him on Saturday. But on Sunday managers at Walmart reported a group of shoplifters.

The shoplifters led police on a high-speed chase. At the wheel: Charly Ledbetter. He gave himself up and is behind bars, charged with fleeing, complicity to theft and kidnapping.
