ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – Police say a father saved his family from two home intruders. Now, one of the alleged intruders is dead. The other is facing several charges as he recovers from multiple gunshot wounds.

The shooting happened on Newport Ave. in the Bevo Mill neighborhood in south St. Louis.

Police say a 17-year-old girl went outside to get something from her car when two armed men confronted her and used her as a human shield as they forced her to walk back into her house. The girl's parents reportedly saw what was happening, each retrieved a gun, and fired at the men as they came inside. Police say the teen's father hit both men.

One of the suspects, 31-year old Terrell Johnson, was pronounced dead in the victim's living room. The other, 33-year old Cortez McClinton, was shot several times and taken to the hospital. He's now charged with second degree murder, burglary, kidnapping, and armed criminal action.

One neighbor tells us she heard the gunshots, and is glad her neighbors weren't hurt.

"You have to protect yourself. You just can't let people do that. You have to have some kind of protection," said Joan Bryan, who lives a few houses down, and has lived in Bevo Mill her entire life. She says she's seen an increase in crime in recent years.

Police say no one in the victim's family was hurt, including a 5-year-old boy who was also in the home at the time of the shooting.
