EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – A 17-year-old is accused of murdering a 16-year-old in the parking lot of a Madison market last week.
Craig D. Miller of Lovejoy is charged with first-degree murder after Malik A. Garrett of Venice was shot to death in the parking lot of Smiley's Market in the 300 block of Madison Avenue around 5:15 p.m. Friday.
Garrett was found lying on the ground, suffering from three gunshot wounds to his chest and abdomen. He was taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center where he died about an hour later.
Madison County State's Attorney Thomas D. Gibbons says officers identified Miller as a suspect after determining he had an ongoing dispute with Garrett. Miller was taken into custody later that evening.
Gibbons says Miller had arrived at the market and fired a gun into a crowd, which included Garrett. Garrett was the only person shot.
Miller is charged as an adult with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm. He's held at the Madison County Juvenile Detention Center in Edwardsville without bond.
