CASEYVILLE, Ill. – A man and woman accused of fleeing during a traffic stop are in custody and facing charges.
Det. Gerard P. Spratt with the Caseyville Police Department says an officer conducted a traffic stop for a minor violation shortly before 12 p.m. Tuesday along State Route 157. The officer saw the male driver switch places with the female passenger before pulling over.
During the traffic stop, Spratt says the officer discovered the male passenger, identified as 20-year-old Bryan A. Hibbler, did not have a valid Illinois driver's license. When the officer attempted to arrest Hibbler, Spratt says the female, identified as 26-year-old Joy R. Hawthorne, put the vehicle in gear and drove from the scene.
Spratt says the officer pursued the vehicle on St. Clair Avenue, but stopped the chase for public safety reasons.
Around 4 p.m. Tuesday the officer tracked down Hibbler and Hawthrone in the 1400 block of Gay Avenue in East St. Louis. Spratt says both ran, but Hibbler was taken into custody a short time later.
Hawthorne surrendered to police a short time later. She is charged with aggravated fleeing and attempting to elude a peace officer. Her bond is set at $25,000.
Hibbler is charged with resisting a peace officer, and driving without a valid license. He was also issued citations for traffic violations. His bond is set at $1,500.
Both are held at the St. Clair County Jail.
