FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. – A 25-year-old Fairview Heights man is charged after police say he attempted to break into an unmarked police car.

John W. Gaynor is charged with one count of attempted burglary and two counts of thefts – subsequent.

Lt. Mike Hoguet with the Fairview Heights Police Department says early Wednesday morning officers were conducting surveillance along St. Clair Road in an unmarked police car. The officers said they saw a suspect, now identified as Gaynor, walking around with a flashlight, turning it on and off.

Hoguet says the officers then watched as Gaynor approached the police vehicle and attempt to enter it. The officers identified themselves, and they say Gaynor ran from the scene. He was taken into custody a short time later.

Gaynor is held at the St. Clair County Jail on $75,000 bail.
