UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KSDK) - A 20-year-old man is dead and a 39 year-old man wounded after shots rang out at a University City High School class reunion.

Thousands of University City High alumni filled Heman Park on Saturday. The reunion, which is open to all University High graduates, was peaceful until the shootings around 7 p.m.

Sunday, people who attended the gathering condemned the violence.

"We look forward to this every year. It's like a big family reunion," said University City High graduate Reggie Lloyd.

Witnesses say the Mario Wallace was shot multiple times near a creek. It happened across the park from the picnic, and Lloyd said it had nothing to do with the alumni gathering.

"That yesterday was unfortunate, and I hate that it put a damper on what has been going on for 13 years. And it put a black cloud over our tradition," Lloyd said.

A look at the victim's Facebook page seems to indicate he may have had ties to gang culture, but people close to him say that's not the case, and so far University City Police have not released a motive for the shooting.

"There is an issue going on with our youth, not just in U City but St. Louis and across the country that needs to be dealt with," said University City High graduate Orlando Watson. "We all have to take some ownership in that part. The kids need resources, things to do and they wouldn't get into this kind of mess. The sad thing is a young kid from this area was shot and his family is in a lot of pain right now. So we're just praying for the family."

The 39 year-old victim was hit in the leg and is being treated at a hospital.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call University City Police at 314-725-2211 extension 8010.
