JACKSON, Mo. (AP) - A southeast Missouri man has been sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with a fatal shooting at a nightclub.
The Southeast Missourian reports that 25-year-old Alexander Harris entered the plea Tuesday in the shooting death of 32-year-old Nicholas Gilbert of Sikeston.
The shooting happened in December 2012 at a now-closed nightclub called The Spot in Cape Girardeau. Harris' younger brother, Malcolm Harris, was charged with second-degree murder in the case but prosecutors later dismissed the charge, citing insufficient evidence.
Police say there was an altercation on the dance floor of the club, and someone produced a gun that Alexander Harris took.
Detective Don Perry says Harris "recklessly discharged" the gun, shooting himself in the hand and Gilbert in the chest.
