ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Prepping for back to school means spending money. You can cut your costs by figuring out what your kids don't need.
Who would have thought that you shouldn't buy your college bound student clothes? Well, that's according to the folks at Deal News, who made a list of what not to buy your college student.
A printer is on top of this Deal News list since, well, it's the digital age. Professors often accept paperless assignments. Not to mention, many schools have printing facilities.
While students need computers, Deal News said that they don't need tablets. Tell your kid a well-equipped laptop gets the job done.
And your daughter might protest, but clothing also made Deal News' list. According to Deal News, you never know who will get hit with the freshman 15, especially if your kid is adjusting to an all-you-can-eat meal plan.
Just in case, save the clothing budget.
Expensive bedding is also something not to buy them. Just say no to special bedding, since it will probably be destroyed, and they won't be using sheets for those extra-long twin mattresses after college.
An HDTV is on the list. Your college-bound kid probably watches shows and movies via Netflix, Hulu and YouTube, so a laptop is all they'll need. Besides, most colleges have TVs located in common rooms.
If you must, just give them a hand-me-down set.
Deal News also says not to buy an iron and ironing board. It might just be a better idea to buy wrinkle-free clothes.
