HAZELWOOD, Mo. – A Hazelwood West English and journalism teacher has been named Missouri Teacher of the Year.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced Chris Holmes received this year's honors.

Holmes, an educator for the past 13 years with eight in Hazelwood schools, received the unexpected news at an all-school assembly Tuesday morning.

He is the 2013-2014 district teacher of the year, and he previously received the honor of Educator of the Year by the Governor's Council on Disability.

Holmes will represent the state of Missouri in the National Teacher of the Year competition. He will be honored Oct. 27 along with the six finalists, which included three other teachers from the St. Louis metropolitan area.
