KSDK - We've been told for a long time that moderate drinkers are generally healthier, have better cardiovascular function, and a lower risk of death than those who don't drink at all.
Now a new finding out of Oregon Health and Science University adds another twist: moderate drinking may actually bolster our immune system, and help fight off infection.
The research was published Dec. 17 in the journal Vaccine.
The study wasn't done in humans, but in a group of small monkeys.
Scientists looked at their vaccine response.
The bottom line: The heavy drinkers showed greatly diminished vaccine responses.
But the more surprising finding: the moderate-drinking monkeys had enhanced responses to the vaccine.
Now scientists want to know why this happens.
