ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - Some startling new findings about the benefits of bariatric surgery.

It's turning out to be a better way to treat diabetes than traditional drug therapy alone.

A new study shows people who had gastric bypass surgery or a gastric sleeve kept their blood sugar under control for a least three years.

They also lost weight, felt better, exercised more and it helped them manage their blood pressure.

What does it mean for so many people who struggle with their weight?

Dr. Michael Lim is the director of the division of cardiology at St. Louis University Medical Center.

He appeared on First at Four, answering questions about diabetes and bariatric surgery, a higher heart attack and cardiovascular death rate among women who drink diet soda, and a new test for diagnosing heart attacks.
