MONTGOMERY CITY, Mo. (KSDK) - A woman walking down a street around 2 a.m. Thursday was struck and killed by a drunk driver. Police say the driver Curtis Huenefeld is a repeat offender and has been convicted with driving while intoxicated in 2005 and 2006.
Court documents also show that in 2005 he was convicted of leaving the scene of an accident. It happened in Montgomery City, Mo. and Huenefeld is in county jail on a 24 hour hold.
"It's horrible, it's absolutely horrible, it's a tragedy on both sides of the family," said Montgomery City resident Amy Davis.
Police tell us the accident happened in a residential area, near North Walker Street and Highway B.
Court documents show it was just before 2 a.m. Thursday when 52-year-old Lisa Higgenbotham was walking on North Walker and 39-year-old Curtis Huenefeld was driving on the same street. The documents say that Huenefeld told a police officer he didn't see Higgenbotham and hit her with his pickup truck. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It's going to be hard for his side of the family, married with kids and then it's hard for the victims side of the family obviously," said Davis.
Huenefeld is the owner of the Pit Stop Bar and Grill which is just a couple of blocks from where the crime happened. Court documents state that the arresting officer could smell alcohol on Huenefeld and he admitted to the officer that he did have four to six beers while working at the bar Wednesday night.
"Being a small town there are going to be rumors, and different kinds of things that are floating around some of it's true some of it's not true lots of people are going to be hurt by it," said Davis..
Police don't know where the victim was walking to or from, but they tell us she did live close to where she died.
Autopsy results should be back in a few days. Investigators are waiting on toxicology reports to help with the investigation. Prosecutors may be filing more charges against Huenefeld.
