TROY, Mo. (KSDK) - Students are rallying around a teacher diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Troy, Mo.
#TheMixMovement was trending last week on Twitter. The social media explosion is the community's way of making sure he knows how much of an influence he's been.
They are putting together a surprise for Mr. Greg Mix, and plan on giving it to him later this week. We can't show you what it is yet, but all of the students are part of it.
About this time last year, Mr. Mix, a long time psychology teacher at Troy Buchanan High School, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
"He just wasn't there one day, and you hear about that, and obviously, the prayers for the family, and it's just really unfortunate and especially being Mr. Mix," said Connor Wiemann, a student at the high school.
He says Mr. Mix was the teacher to have, always funny and likeable. Now, Mr. Mix is the subject of trending #TheMixMovement, spreading the love and support for the teacher. The hashtag is a project of a high school business class, and teacher Megan Miller says Mr. Mix is shocked by the support.
"He can't believe that this is happening. He didn't ask to be put in the spotlight, and he is. But he's just overwhelmed, I think, with all the love and support," said Miller.
#TheMixMovement has been mentioned in more than 40,000 tweets and more than $3,200 has been raised on their YouCaring.com webpage. The Facebook page has hundreds of likes and pictures from the teacher's former students. Mr. Mix taught hundreds of kids through the years, and it seems the lessons are still coming from the favorite teacher.
"Right now, I am learning that if you really care you can make a difference. I mean, he cared about us, and whether he knows it or not, even the kids that didn't have him, I mean the underclassmen, they didn't have him, but they are still affected by his life," said senior Brad Walton.
