WOOD RIVER, Ill. (KSDK) – Funeral arrangements have been made for an East Alton, Ill. teen killed in a car accident Saturday night.
Visitation for 16-year-old Samantha "Sami" Owsley will be held Wednesday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran in Wood River, Ill. Her funeral will be held the following morning at 10 a.m. at the church.
Owsley, a student and tennis player at Roxana High School, died after a car accident in the 5000 block of Buchta Road around 9 p.m. Saturday.
Four other teens were injured in the accident, and the community is rallying around them.
One of the survivors is Michael Mielke. He was sitting in the backseat of the car and suffered broken ribs and a punctured spleen, among other injuries.
Michael's mother tells us he texted her about a half hour before the crash happened to tell her he'd be home soon. She wouldn't talk to him again she rushed to the hospital.
"You're so glad that your kid's ok. But your heart hurts so bad for the other family," said Linda Mielke.
The three other girls in the car suffered injuries ranging from broken bones to head trauma. One of the girls, Brooke Swarringin, suffered a broken pelvis and had to have surgery to regain circulation to her arm, according to her uncle. Community members say all of the teens in the crash are involved in school and extracurricular activities, and are all well-liked.
"They're just a bunch of loved kids, just amazing kids," said Linda.
