ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – There's a lot of buzz online about a New York Times article that focuses on north St. Louis.

The article is called "In Places Like North St. Louis, Gunfire Still Rules the Night." The story is long and detailed, and interviews people who talk about a "never ending cycle" of violence in their communities.

It says when they hear statistics about crime dropping, they snicker.

NewsChannel 5 took that article to St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson, who says the article left out a lot of the story.

"We do a great job of enforcement, and I think that was the piece that was missing from the story," said Chief Dotson. "We arrest almost 30,000 people a year. We do a great job of going out and investigating crimes. We have a high clearance rate, a high solving rate."

Chief Dotson says he spent over an hour with the writer, who's from Kansas City, and he also spoke with the author on the phone. All of that dialogue was boiled down to just a couple of quotes.
