HERCULANEUM, Mo. - Doe Run is preparing to shut down its infamous lead smelting plant in Herculaneum.

The closure is part of a 2010 settlement between the St. Louis based company and the Environmental Protection Agency.

In the past, the agency has cited the company for air emissions, elevated blood lead levels in children, elevated lead levels in yards and lead dust in homes.

Of the smelter's 300 employees, about 75 will stay on to help with other aspects of production and maintenance.
