ST. LOUIS – St. Louis police are warning of a man who burglarized a home while posing as a city Water Department employee.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 5700 block of Pernod. The suspect is described as a short, heavy-set Caucasian man in his 30s, with grey hair and last seen wearing a brown work coat and blue jeans.

Schron Jackson, a spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department says the man knocked on the 79-year-old victim's door and told her he was with the Water Department and needed to come inside her home to check for bacteria in her water.

The woman let the man in, and brought him to her basement. Once in the basement, the man called someone on his cell phone and distracted the woman for approximately 10 minutes. He then told her to put bleach in her water and abruptly left.

Jackson says the victim became suspicious and called the Water Department. They said they did not have any workers in her area.

On Wednesday, the victim discovered several pieces of jewelry missing from her bedroom and contacted police.
