ALTON, Ill. (KSDK) – Subzero temperatures activated a sprinkler system in Alton Square Mall and has caused problems for a small number of stores.

Three occupied stores and two vacant stores had heavy water flow in them after a pipe froze and split in half triggering the sprinkler system.

Alton Fire Department responded to a water flow alarm around 3 a.m. on the west side of the mall.

The five store fronts will need damage assessment and clean-up Tuesday. All other mall operations will proceed as normal.

No word on the names of the businesses impacted.
