COLUMBIA, Mo. – Thursday marked the 122nd anniversary of the Academic Hall fire at the University of Missouri.
Academic Hall, designed by Missouri State Capitol designer A. Stephen Hills, was constructed from 1840 until 1843.
The fire destroyed the building Jan. 9, 1892, and all that remained were the six iconic columns that still stand on the Columbia, Mo. campus today.
According to Mizzou's website, the Board of Curators voted to tear down the columns the following year, but fans rallied to keep them after an inspection found they were stable.
