EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Flares found taped to a propane tank shut down rail traffic in Edwardsville Monday afternoon.

Robin Chapman, a spokesperson for Norfolk Southern, says an assistant track supervisor found a 1.2 pound propane tank on the track near Highway 140 and Quercus Grove Road around 12 p.m.

When the supervisor got a closer look, he noticed someone had taped fuses to the tank, and tried unsuccessfully to light them on fire.

The Illinois Secretary of State Police responded to the scene and detonated the device. Nobody was injured.

The incident remains under investigation.

Rail traffic reopened around 4:30 p.m.
