ST. LOUIS COUNTY – Lt. Colonel Jon Belmar has been named the new chief of St. Louis County Police Department Friday morning.

Belmar is currently the commanding officer for the division of special operations, according to the St. Louis County Police Department website.

He replaces retiring Chief Tim Fitch.

Chief Belmar says he's elated about the new gig. NewsChannel 5 spoke with him shortly after the announcement was made and he talked about his platform.

"I believe that police departments ought to have two primary missions: That is effectively responding to calls for emergency services and making a difference when we get there. And to develop strategies in order to reduce crime to make St. Louis County a safer place to live and work."

Like the last chief, he says he plans on having a presence on social media. Look for Chief Belmar on Twitter soon.
