ST. LOUIS - Approximately two dozen homes were evacuated Monday morning following a gas leak in the North Hampton neighborhood.

Utility crews were called to the 3400 block of Macklind Avenue around 8:50 a.m. Monday.

Crews were unable to turn off the gas line to the house, forcing them to dig up part of the curb to reach a shutoff valve.

The homes were evacuated as a measure of caution while authorities look to keep displaced residents comfortable until the situation is resolved.

Residents were allowed back into their homes before 4 p.m. Laclede Gas representatives will make their way through the neighborhood to re-light pilot lights and restore gas services.
