ST. LOUIS – Strong storms moved through the St. Louis area Thursday afternoon, causing damage throughout the region.
According to the National Weather Service, a tornado destroyed seven outbuildings in Arenzville, Ill. in Cass County. A tornado also caused power poles to snap and campers to blow over in Mechanicsburg, Ill.
High winds caused thousands to lose power in both Missouri and Illinois. There's no word yet on when power to these areas will be restored. Wind also brought power lines down at Marine and McKelvey in Maryland Heights, and in the 9800 block of West Florissant in Dellwood, Mo. A tree was also toppled in Clayton, and a utility pole to fall onto a woman's vehicle in Alton, Ill.
The National Weather Service reports winds in Hazelwood, Mo. were clocked at 62 miles per hour.
In Illinois, wind caused a tree two feet in diameter to blow over in Bethalto, and siding and shingles to blow off homes in Highland.
Golf ball-sized hail caused tree damage in Hornersville, Mo., and quarter-sized hail was reported in Marble Hill, Mo. and Carbondale, Ill.
Dellwood power lines came down Thursday afternoon during the storm.
