COLUMBIA, Mo. – A Columbia, Mo. firefighter killed in the line of duty was remembered Thursday morning.

Lt. Bruce Britt was killed while trying to rescue victims after a walkway collapsed at the University of Missouri over the weekend.

On Thursday, a memorial service was held for the 23 year veteran. Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff in Lt. Britt's honor.

Meanwhile, we're getting new information on how he died. Police reports show he was going door-to-door looking for trapped residents because emergency responders thought they were dealing with a roof collapse.

Lt. Britt was on the second-floor walkway of University Village Apartments when the walkway collapsed. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
