Police say the accident happened at 8:55 a.m. in the 3100 block of Lafayette. They say an Acura TL was speeding westbound on Lafayette and collided with a Ford Focus after failing to stop at a stop sign at S. Compton.

The driver of the Acura drove directly into the path of the Focus, which was already in the intersection.

The Acura hit the rear quarter panel of the Focus, which caused the driver of the Acura to lose control and hit a tree. The Acura was split into two pieces.

Fifteen-year-old Jada Williams was sitting in the back of the Acura. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say two males from the Acura, ages 18 and 19, were transported to an area hospital in serious but stable condition. Authorities say it is unclear which male was driving the vehicle.
