ST. LOUIS - They put their lives on the line for our country, now the City of St Louis hopes to change the way the city hires veterans.

On Thursday, the city honored ten local companies with the Flag of Freedom Award. Those companies have made an effort to hire our vets as part of the Show Me Heroes program, which has connected 6,000 Missouri veterans with civilian jobs.

Mayor Francis Slay says he'd like to see the city do even more, so he's asking voters to pass a bill Nov. 4 that would allow the city to give preferential hiring treatment to veterans.

He says if the bill passes, it will be up to the Board of Alderman to decide exactly what advantages they'll give to veterans when it comes to the hiring process.
