WELLSTON, Mo. (KSDK) - Several Wellston city councilmen have initiated impeachment proceedings against the mayor, two weeks before Election Day.

According to documents released to NewsChannel 5, Mayor Linda Whitfield is accused of increasing her salary, hiring employees and spending money without city council approval.

In December 2012, she presented Officer James Kenner to the council to approve for temporary work with the police department. Council never approved him, but according to court documents he was paid more than $16,000 over a six-month span. Councilman Samuel Shannon says the mayor authorized that payment without anyone else's knowledge.

The city sued Kenner and a St. Louis County judge ordered him to pay that back.

Shannon tells us they've had problems with the mayor for years. He is one of her opponents in April's mayoral election, but says that has nothing to do with the impeachment process.

"These issues were ongoing before the election. And we as a council owe it to the citizens to do what we were elected to do, and that's govern over the city's monies in a correct and proper manner," Shannon said.

Another city councilman tells us it's possible that if they impeach Mayor Whitfield that they'd pursue criminal charges.

We made several attempts to get a response from the mayor, but she didn't return any of our calls. A supporter did speak with us briefly off-camera. She says the councilmen are on a witch hunt.
