JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) – The number of car crashes involving impaired drivers has decreased in Jefferson County, according to new numbers released by the Division of Highway Safety.

Results show that from 2007-2012 the total of car wrecks by impaired drivers decreased by 22 percent, fatal by 27 percent, and serious injuries by 49 percent. Further, there were only 258 crashes in 2012 compared to more than 330 crashes total in 2007.

The sheriff's office received grant money dedicated to a unit specializing in watching the roads for impaired and intoxicated drivers.

Funding will continue through 2014.
