ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KSDK) – Fairmount Park opens for its 88th season of horse racing, but the track aims to become more of a year-round facility.

The track has been trying to bring slot machines to the park for years so it could be used year round. The latest legislation being discussed in Springfield calls for all horse tracks in Illinois to get slot machines--except for Fairmount.

Some worry, it would impact the Casino Queen in East Saint Louis. The City of East Saint Louis heavily relies on the casino for it's revenue.

Plus, Fairmount continues to host less and less racing days.

Back in the late 1990s, the track had around 232 racing days. Last year, it was 65. This year, the number is 52.

A spokesperson for the track says Fairmount's future is uncertain if it can't become "a racino."
