JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. – Dozens of homes are threatened by a dam that may breach between De Soto and Hillsboro.

Residents of nearly 40 homes near Castle Ranch Road in Jefferson County are under a voluntary evacuation.

Lt. John Scullin with the De Soto Rural Fire Department says there is a six acre lake near the 11500 block of Castle Ranch Road that has a dam in danger of breaching. He says the 1940s and 1950s there was an old resort on the property, and the area has been neglected for years.

On Friday an area resident contacted the fire department with concerns about the dam. Firefighters came out and took photos of the dam and sent them to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources for evaluation.

The DNR confirmed the dam is in danger of breaching, so firefighters issued a voluntary evacuation of nearly 40 nearby homes.

Scullin says it is not likely the water would reach the homes, but property and livestock would be flooded.

At 10:30 p.m. crews started a controlled release of the water.
