ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – The Environmental Protection Agency will begin conducting tests for radiation in surrounding areas around West Lake Landfill.

A group of moms here in Bridgeton took matters into their own hands and conducted their own testing at the Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex. They said their results showed evidence of abnormal radiation levels. That prompted a baseball tournament to cancel.

Some youth teams won't practice there until they're told it's safe.

The EPA says, "It's unfortunate that questionable information in the place of scientific data has created public worry--we want to complete this screening so the public can be assured the facility is suitable for use."

One of the moms said we provided data to them, and it was assured. They have the logs.

What the group wanted was the EPA to come in and do more testing--and that's what's being done.

Testing is expected to last about a week and the results will take at least a month to come in.
