CASEYVILLE, Ill. – The village board in Caseyville has voted to terminate the chief of the police department.

Jose M. Alvarez was hired by Mayor Len Black in September 2013 after the former chief committed suicide after he was placed on administrative leave.

Alvarez was fired by Black Feb. 12 to "take a different direction" with the police department, but the village board voted to keep him on as chief.

During a Feb. 19 village board meeting, Alvarez got into an altercation with Sgt. Frank Moore. Alvarez was accused of striking Moore's chest during the meeting. After that board meeting, Black fired Alvarez a second time, but Alvarez asked a judge for a restraining order, which was granted, and allowed him to remain chief of police.

In April Alvarez was charged with one count of disorderly conduct and one count of battery for an incident during village board meeting. He was suspended indefinitely without pay.

On Wednesday night the village board held a special meeting and were split three to three on a vote to terminate Alvarez.

Black cast the deciding vote to fire Alvarez. His termination is effective immediately.
