JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Gov. Jay Nixon signed a bill Friday to protect families of fallen soldiers.
House Bill 1372 was passed unanimously by the Missouri House and Senate and specifies people are prohibited from protesting at military funerals.
The bill was created after members of the Westboro Baptist Church started protesting funerals of Missouri soldiers.
"This law continues our efforts to protect the rights of families grieving at a funeral to not experience hate-filled intrusions," Gov. Nixon said. "The very concept of these protests is repulsive to the vast majority of Missourians."
The bill was patterned after a local Missouri city ordinance upheld by the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals.
