FESTUS, Mo. (KSDK) - This weekend you'll have the chance to own a home like no other: a cave in Festus!
The unique dwelling was built inside a cave will be up for auction on Sunday. The auction company says the property was once a roller rink and concert venue for artists like Ike and Tina Turner. Now it's a 17,000 square-foot home with four bedrooms and two bathrooms.
William Sleeper, the man who built the home, said one of the pluses about living in a cave is heating and cooling costs. It stays an average of 70 degrees year round.
Since the home is technically built in an old mine shaft, you don't have to worry about critters you normally find in caves like bats.
"You live with nature a little bit. I don't think we have particularly any more bugs or critters than any other house. We might see them sooner," Sleeper said.
His family is selling the home because it's time to downsize. They're also selling all of their personal items in the auction.
The auction begins at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Bidding will start at $100,000. The company auctioning it off says there are no comparisons in the neighborhood for a cave, so it's hard to say what it's truly worth.
