ST. LOUIS - Tuesday night NewsChannel 5 investigated how to prevent medical ID theft.
Thieves only need your name and health insurance ID number to pretend they're you. They use your insurance to either feed their prescription drug habit or file false claims and make quick cash.
Here are the warning signs you've become a victim:
1. If explanation of benefits lists claims you did not receive
2. Also, be aware of medical bills that don't make sense
3. Or if your insurance company says you've reached your benefit limit and you don't think you have
4. A denial of insurance because your medical records show a condition you do not have
Roughly 1.5 million people have become medical ID theft victims.
